My fight with cancer isn't over — it's just changed shape

Thirteen years facing kidney cancer, and why I'm asking for a bit of support today.

I was a family medicine physician until kidney cancer changed everything. Since my diagnosis in 2012, I've had multiple surgeries, including radical removal of my left shoulder blade after a tumor nearly took my arm and invaded the nerves in my neck. I've been through immunotherapy that ultimately didn't work, a liver toxicity scare that almost required a transplant, and surgery where doctors were prepared to give me a permanent colostomy and urostomy — until they found, mid-operation, that they could save both organs.

Today I'm off active cancer treatment and living under close surveillance, with scans every few months. A chronic spinal injury adds daily nerve pain to the picture. I'm no longer able to practice medicine because of my health, and I rely on Social Security Disability.
